TENNESSEE

Watauga River: The Watauga River flows 78 miles from top to bottom, but, the river becomes a tail-water below Wilbur Dam (a tail-water is a river that is fueled by water flowing from the bottom of a dam). The water from the bottom of the lake creates cold, clean water year- round. This allows for a healthy, sustained fish population of 8000 fish per square mile and poses some unique and fantastic fishing from a drift boat. It is best known for its immense Caddis hatch that runs strong through April and early May but fishing doesn’t slow down from there. It is well worth a trip with one of our experienced guides!

South Holston River: The South Holston is another tailwater river flowing out of the South Holston Dam. This river meets up with our other favorite, the Watauga, at Boone Lake. It is widely recognized as one of the best rivers on the East Coast, if not the country. It is teeming with great trout populations and has a whopping 10,000 fish per square mile. It has gained its fame from not only the fish that live there, but the prolific Sulphur and Blue-Winged Olive hatches.

NORTH CAROLINA

Within an hour of our restaurant and fly shop here in Blowing Rock, there are literally hundreds of creeks and rivers with wade access where fish can be caught. The opportunities are never ending, from our well stocked rivers such as the Watauga or Helton, to our small creeks chasing native brook trout, we have it all! Spring and Fall are peak seasons for fly fishing in the high country but we are catching great fish year round.

VIRGINIA

Within an hour or less, an array of opportunities lie in Southern VA. The South Holston River (that we also fish in TN) runs right between Damascus and Abingdon for more float trips as well as great wading. From there, head upstream to the Laurel Creek and from there to Beaverdam Creek right through downtown Damascus. If you’re looking to burn some energy, you can also take a nice bike ride along the famous Virginia Creeper Trail! This area primarily fishes best in Spring or Fall but is always a great option if you’re looking to avoid the crowds.
